How would you explain your job to a ten-year-old?

When there are big changes coming at work which will affect people, like a new a new type of technology, I help to work out how to do those changes well, and help people understand what it means for them.

What’s your favourite thing about your role?

I really like having the opportunity to get involved in such a wide range of initiatives. For example, as part of different teams, I’ve been involved in work to embed Parliament’s digital and data operating model, supporting the launch of Parliament’s Information and Digital Strategy, and I’m part of the PDS Culture and Values Group which seeks to support a positive culture within PDS. It’s great to feel like I’m able to make a positive impact in how we plan and deliver change.

What’s your favourite thing about working in Parliament?

The first is the people, who tend to be friendly, helpful, supportive, and collaborative, not to mention incredibly knowledgeable (and always willing to share their knowledge). The second is that I feel like we all contribute, in different ways, to the smooth running of Parliament, which is such an important common goal binding our work.

How has your career led you to PDS?

I’ve worked in Parliament for around 19 years, starting off in the first joint Digital department the year it was established. I’ve been fortunate to have a range of interesting roles, in different specialisms, in PDS and the House of Commons over that time. From internal communications to talent management, inclusion and diversity, and large-scale change. The opportunities to learn and gain experience in different functions is something that I will always be grateful for.

Which of PDS’s values resonates most with you and why?

I like all the PDS values but, as a continual learner, the one that often most resonates with me is “Curiosity”. I’m always keen to understand more about a challenge or seek out different points of view to see what I might be missing, or just to learn for its own sake, and it’s great to work in an environment where this is valued and encouraged. I think being curious at work, and in life, can really help open up our way of thinking and see the world in new ways.

Do you have any hidden talents or interests?

I love to paint, although I’m not very good at it! I last studied art at school and rediscovered my love of painting in recent years. I very much take an abstract “paint what you feel” approach, which can be a great way to get things out of your head and onto a page without worrying too much about the end result!  This question has reminded me that I haven’t picked up a paintbrush for a while so I’m going to get onto that in the coming weeks.

What are you excited about outside of work this year?

I’m really excited to continue making my house a home. I moved in a couple of years ago and progress has been slow and steady. But I think, this year, I’ll be able to finish adding some colour to the remaining rooms (ready to join the sunshine-yellow hallway that already brings me joy every day).
